Sustainable construction

Common language

In response to the need for more sustainable construction, new concepts, phrases, terms and expressions are being used in the construction industry across Europe. The European Concrete Platform (ECP) working together with the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) believed it valuable to gather together these terms and establish a ‘working’ glossary of the concepts currently in use in a concise, easily accessible form.

Energy performance of buildings

The operation of buildings represents 40% of the total energy consumption in Europe. The main energy benefit of using concrete in buildings is its high thermal mass that leads to thermal stability. This saves energy and produces a better indoor climate/environment for building occupants and users.

Environmental Product Declaration

Fire safety

The fire resistant properties of concrete provides benefits in terms of the protection of lives, property and the environment

Sustainable consumption & production

The European Commission launched its SCP (Sustainable Consumption & Production) and SIP (Sustainable Industry Policy) Action Plan in July 2008. It includes a series of proposals on sustainable consumption and production that will contribute to improving the environmental performance of products and increase the demand for more sustainable goods and production technologies.
